Nine months after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, I embarked on an expedition into a still-reeling city, in neighborhoods far removed from the whitewashed nightlife of Bourbon Street.
Accompanied by a friend from New Orleans, I made my way through the city, and off the beaten path. I met amazing people who shared with me their heartbreaking stories of destruction and a city and country that left them to die. But, I was also struck by the kindness of everyone, hearing stories about neighbors helping neighbors.
